Emma Watson Breaks Bad In 'Bling Ring' Teaser

Former "Harry Potter" starlet takes on the darkest role yet in the new Sofia Coppola film.

Well, that's a side of Emma Watson we haven't seen before. The first teaser for Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" premiered on the internationalPremiere site on Friday (March 8), and we have our first look at the baddest the "Harry Potter" alum has ever gone before.

"The Bling Ring," which is based on a true story, recounts a series of high-profile robberies that occurred in and around Los Angeles from 2008 to 2009 targeting celebrities like Paris Hilton, "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge and Lindsay Lohan.
As a member of the group of teenagers known as the "Bling Ring," Watson is seen breaking into Hilton's house. The famous heiress' face even makes a cameo appearance. In real life, the group broke into Hilton's house on at least five occasions. A number of the stars burgled by the group reportedly cooperated with the filmmakers.
The teaser strikes a similar tone to a different A24 release, the upcoming "Spring Breakers," which stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco. After the group robs Hilton's house, the remainder of the preview focuses largely on the group's wild lifestyle and eventual arrest.
"Bling Ring" marks a dramatic shift for Watson in her post-"Potter" career, having already won over audiences in non-Hermione roles like "My Week with Marilyn"
The film also stars Leslie Mann and Gavin Rossdale.
"The Bling Ring" will open in select cities on June 14 with a wider release likely to come in the weeks after that.

How Great And Powerful Will 'Oz' Be At The Box Office?

Disney's retelling of classic tale is expected to make at least $90 million during its first weekend.

It looks like the yellow brick road is about to be paved with gold. "Oz the Great and Powerful" is poised to storm the box-office this weekend with a mammoth $90 million opening, according to industry experts and widely reported pre-release polling. Disney is predicting a more conservative $75 million for their sort-of prequel to 1939's classic "The Wizard of Oz."

James Franco's Oz Is A Combination Of Clark Gable And Charlie Chaplin

However it shakes out, there is little doubt that the 3-D epic will have the biggest opening of 2013 thus far. The title character in "Oz" is played by James Franco, who recently told PointMaza that his would-be wizard is "a bit of a goofball, but also kind of a ladies man." The movie reunites him with "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi and carried a reported $200-million-plus price-tag.
Going into the weekend, reports surfaced that Disney is already planning a sequel, which said something of the studio's optimism about the picture's prospects. If "Oz" passes the $100 million mark during its opening weekend, it will join "Alice in Wonderland" ($116 million) and "The Hunger Games" ($152 million) as the only movies to do so in the month of March.
"Disney's 'Oz: the Great and Powerful' has all the bells and whistles a modern blockbuster needs these days to be a gargantuan hit," Exhibitor Relations box-office analyst Jeff Bock told PointMaza. "Sure, it could use a little more heart, but the vast array of likable characters and the CGI realm created by Raimi and company make for an impressive journey. 'Oz' may not be the blockbuster that audiences want exactly, but with 2013's subpar offerings, it's the blockbuster they need right now."
International grosses should be very strong as well. " 'Oz' also opens day-and-date overseas in over than 80 percent of its targeted territories, so expect numbers on par with the stateside debut, and possibly more," Bock added. "Last spring's 'John Carter' was dud-on-arrival in the U.S. with $30 million in the US, but it hit $70 million across the pond."
Last weekend's #1 film, "Jack the Giant Slayer," only made $14 million overseas, despite its nearly $200 million production budget. Its $28 million stateside debut made it this year's first big-budget flop. "It will go down as a massive misfire for Warner Bros.," Bock said.
"Dead Man Down" is the only other new film going into wide release. It's a revenge drama starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, from the director of the Swedish version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," Niels Arden Oplev.
"Noomi Rapace and Colin Farrell's chemistry is electric. But it feels more like something that is going to debut on VOD," said MovieFanatic.com's Joel Amos. "That feeling that it emits may hurt the movie in terms of its box office numbers."
Even on 2,175 screens, "Dead Man Down" won't gather more than $6 million this weekend, according to Bock. "Does anyone have the cojones to tell Colin Farrell that he just isn't headliner material?" Bock joked of the Irish star often loved by critics in smaller films but who has struggled to carry costly movies like the "Total Recall" and "Fright Night" remakes.
Overall, the box office has been off from last year (despite the $100 million-plus success of "Identity Thief"). The potential big success of "Oz," followed by "G.I. Joe 2" later this month, should certainly help rejuvenate theaters.

'Iron Man 3' Trailer: Five Burning Questions

Even though our heads are still spinning from all of those Iron Man suits, it's time to dissect the latest trailer from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tony Stark is having some trouble sleeping and an Oscar-winning international terrorist isn't making things easier.
The new preview for "Iron Man 3" has given us a fuller sense of what to expect when Robert Downey Jr. returns to the suit, but there are still some nagging questions that we just can't seem to wrap our heads — or self-applying body armors — around.
What's Wrong With Tony? "Why can't I sleep?" The trailer begins with an introduction to an insomniac, post-"Avengers" Tony Stark. Everything in the life of the genius/billionaire/playboy/philanthropist seems to be in order, but something is nagging at him. What could that be? After Iron Man's brief but meaningful trip into space during "The Avengers," rumors began circulating about Stark's limit pushing and his quest to keep the world safe. Will this unrest eventually drive to him to seek help from a team of rag-tag galactic guardians, perhaps?
How Crazy Is Ben Kingsley Going With The Mandarin?Because it sounds like he's taking it all the way. "You'llll neverrrr see me comingggg." From what we've heard so far, Kingsley is really relishing the opportunity to play a big, bad superhero villain. "[Director] Shane [Black] allowed me to push the boundaries of the role so that I'm allowed to go a bit bonkers," Kingsley told Empire recently. But have we seen the extent of his crazy? We wouldn't bet on it. After "Iron Man 2" phoned it in the villain department, we're hoping for some fireworks from Kingsley and Mandarin.
What Requires Avenging? At some point in "Iron Man 3," the Mandarin's attacks will become very, very personal to Tony. Sure, anyone would be mad if a terrorist destroyed his or her cliff-side mansion, but we're guessing there's more to this quest for vengeance. A previous trailer for "Iron Man 3" strongly hinted that Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan wouldn't be so happy during his third outing, possibly even dying. Is Happy's demise what has Tony out for revenge, or is there something we aren't seeing yet?
"Iron Man 3": That's a whole lot of armor!
What In Asgard Is A "Hulkbuster"? The trailer's big reveal comes right at the very end, about a dozen autonomous Iron Man suits arriving on the scene to provide backup for Tony and Rhodey. There will certainly be plenty of dissections of which armor does what, but the final suit to arrive on the scene, the one that bursts through some scenery, is perhaps the most noteworthy. Known casually as the "Hulkbuster," this suit comes straight from the comics, where Tony created an armor specifically to handle an out-of-control Bruce Banner, if something were to ever go wrong with his newest science buddy. If the Hulkbuster is down for a cameo in "Iron Man 3," will we see some reference to the man it's designed to fend off? Could this be the film's connection to the larger Avengers universe?
What's Left? As excited as the fans are in the wake of the latest trailer, doesn't it feel like Marvel showed a little too much of their hand? While we're sure there's much more to see from the Battle of Many Iron Men, planting that reveal in the trailer — though tantalizing — comes off as a bit spoiler-y. But whether "Iron Man 3" showed off its most spectacular moments in the new trailer, it does reassure us that there are that many badass sequences.
Check out everything we've got on "Iron Man 3."
'Iron Man 3' Is Shaping Up To Be 'Something Special'

'Jack The Giant Slayer' Tops Not-So-Giant Box Office

"Jack the Giant Slayer" was the #1 movie in theaters over the weekend, but with a production budget of nearly $200 million, its $28 million debut was a massive disappointment.
Warner Bros. opened the effects-heavy movie in more than 3,500 locations. Even Disney's similarly big-budgeted "John Carter" did slightly better around the same time last year.
Exclusive Clip From 'Jack The Giant Slayer': Run For Your Life!
Undoubtedly the studio is banking on international receipts and strong word-of-mouth (critics have embraced the film) to keep "Jack" from being remembered as 2013's first big-budget failure. The live-action fairy tale stars Nicholas Hoult as the title character. The former child actor helped carry "Warm Bodies" to a #1 debut earlier this year.
Neither of the weekend's other new widely released films performed very well. "21 and Over," the directorial debut from a couple of writers from "The Hangover," was a bust with just $9 million. Somewhat similarly themed found-footage party film "Project X" opened with $11 million around the same time last year. "The Last Exorcism Part II" was right behind it with slightly more than $8 million; the original debuted with more than double that three years ago.
Last weekend's #1 movie continued to do great business. "Identity Thief" was #2 with $9.7 million. Since it debuted four weekends ago, the first movie to put "Bridesmaids" alum Melissa McCarthy in a lead role has made $107.4 million, making it the first movie of 2013 to cross the $100 million mark. "Identity Thief" also stars Jason Bateman. The film's director also made "Four Christmases," which the directors of "21 and Over" worked on as writers.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Snitch" rounded out the top five with $7.7 million for a 10-day haul of $24.4 million.
The Academy Awards provided a nice boost for several lingering pictures, including Best Picture winner "Argo," despite the fact that the Ben Affleck-directed drama is widely available on DVD, iTunes and other aftermarket outlets. "Argo" jumped 21 percent at the box-office after its big win; the hostage drama has made more than $138 million. "Life of Pi" jumped 43 percent; "Silver Linings Playbook" went up 3 percent. Both are over $100 million, as well.
While it didn't rack up the truckload of Oscar nominations and wins of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (it was nominated for production design, makeup and visual effects), "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" did manage an impressive feat over the weekend, officially crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide.

'21 & Over' Beer Pong Game Piled Up The Pressure

For the comedy's party scenes, Miles Teller and Skylar Astin had to get their game on. And it wasn't easy.

When actors take on new characters (ballerinas or cops, for example), they'll take ballet classes or hit the shooting range to train for their roles. But for Miles Teller, Skylar Astin and Justin Chon, the cast of "21 & Over," all they had to do was play beer pong.
While filming a key scene in the "one crazy night" comedy, Teller and Astin play an all-important game of beer pong that will help them achieve their ultimate goal, getting their passed-out friend (Justin Chon) home in time for his med school interview, but one of the actors couldn't get his game together for the cameras.
'21 And Over' Cast Talks Beer Pong, Love From College Kids
"The beer pong was all real. At one point they needed us to make the game-winning shot," Teller told Point Maza. "We had to get it in one shot, so we actually had to make it; there's no cutaway. And Skylar was just having a really bad day. In the bonus footage, it's like 20 shots, something ridiculous. Not everyone performs under pressure."
Astin was quick to defend himself and his beer pong skills, claiming that a tight-fitting shirt was to blame for his underwhelming performance. "He's the deal, and here's the excuse train coming into town, but I have one of those shirts that kind of cuts you off, the table was angled a bit, the formation was pretty rough, last cup," he said. "But I was sucking a whole bunch that day."
As a part of the promotional tour for the film, the cast has been reaching out to the kids they portray in the film, college students, and according to the stars, "21 & Over" has been finding fans already. "These college kids are just loving it," Teller said. "They're just eating it up. I think it's great. When I was in college, I would have loved to see a movie like this. I think it's a pretty good portrayal. You've got hot girls, hot dudes, and you have Justin."
"You have Justin in a bra and a teddy bear," Astin agreed. "What more could you want in a flick?"

'Harry Potter' Stars Line Up New Storybook Projects

Daniel Radcliffe is in talks to join 'Frankenstein,' while Emma Watson circles lead role in 'Cinderella.'

Two of the young stars of the "Harry Potter" franchise have announced future projects on the very same day, both with a literary spin.
Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe are in talks to join director Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella" and a revisionist version of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," respectively. Both reports came from Variety within a few minutes of each other.

Daniel Radcliffe Gets 'Burned Alive' In 'Horns'
For some time now, Radcliffe has been circling the role of Igor in a new version of "Frankenstein" from director Paul McGuigan and "Chronicle" writer Max Landis, and Variety is reporting that the young actor is now in final talks to join the project.
At this year's Sundance Film Festival, Radcliffe spoke to Point Maza' Josh Horowitz about the prospect of joining "Frankenstein," which the actor says is "interesting" but a very loose adaptation of the original novel. Production on the gothic horror film would begin after Radcliffe's run on London's West End in Martin McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan."
"To say it's in any way an adaptation of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' is probably — it's a Max Landis script, so for anyone who's familiar with Max Landis you'll have some sense of what that will mean," Radcliffe said. "I was thinking the other day — I don't know if that is or is not going to happen at all — but my body could go through it this year playing 'The Cripple of Inishmaan' and then that. My chiropractor is going to be very grateful."
Disney's live-action adaptation of "Cinderella" has recently seen some serious changes. Mark Romanek had been set to direct the film, with Cate Blanchett in the role of the wicked stepmother, but the studio reportedly rejected his vision for being too dark. Branagh joined shortly after Romanek's departure, and now it seems that the project may have finally found its lead.
Watson is said to be in early talks to join the production as the classic rags-to-riches princess. She is coming off a series of high-profile roles, including a critically acclaimed turn in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and Darren Aronofsky's upcoming "Noa

Adele's Oscar Gives Her Half An EGOT: Who Will Join Her?

From Justin Timberlake to Katy Perry, we look at other stars who mightalso EGOT one day.

At Sunday night's Oscars, Adele took home "Best Original Song" honors for her sonorous "Skyfall" theme, only adding to her already overstuffed trophy case and taking another step towards accomplishing what most folks refer to as "the Grand Slam of Show Business:" an EGOT.
For the uninitiated, "EGOT" is an acronym first coined by "Miami Vice" actor Philip Michael Thomas (no, really) and made popular by "30 Rock." It refers to the accomplishment of winning the four major American entertainment awards — the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — and, though it's been a possibility since 1959 (when the first Grammys were held) only a handful of folks have ever done it.
Adele Tears Up During Oscar Acceptance Speech
Yes, it's a pretty exclusive, decidedly odd club — Aubrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg are members — and there are plenty of stars who may or may not actually have EGOTed (Liza Minnelli, James Earl Jones and Barbara Streisand have won all four awards, though in each case, at least one of those was in a non-competitive category) or are really, really close to doing so (Elton John, Cher and "South Park" creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone, to name just a few).
And with her collection of Grammys and brand-new Oscar, Adele seems like a sure bet to pull off a true EGOT (especially if she follows through with plans for a Beyonce-style TV documentary). But she's not alone ... there are plenty of her musical contemporaries who seem poised to one day pull off an EGOT. Here's a look at some hopefuls.
Jennifer Hudson: She won an Oscar for her role in "Dreamgirls" and a Grammy for her debut album, meaning that, like Adele, she's halfway home. She's also appearing on NBC's "Smash," meaning an Emmy is a possibility (a distant one, but still), and, of course, she seems like a natural fit for Broadway. We're willing to bet she EGOTs someday.
Beyonce: She's already got the Grammys, and if she continues with roles in films like "Dreamgirls" an Oscar seems like a mere formality (if not for acting, then in the Best Original Song category). The same goes for her Emmy prospects, especially in the wake of her massively successful HBO doc "Life Is but a Dream." The only thing standing in her way seems to be the Tony, which would probably require her to put her music career on hold for a role on Broadway.
Justin Timberlake: As you are probably aware, he considers himself quite the actor, and if he picks more critical faves like "The Social Network," there's a chance he might take home an Oscar at some point. Oh, and you know he's already got the Grammys. If he decides to do another HBO performance, he might snag an Emmy ... the toughest of the four is probably the Tony, though maybe he could pen an original score or something?
Zooey Deschanel: Sure, she hasn't actually won any of the big four yet, but with her continued musical output (a new She & Him album is due this year), starring role on "New Girl" (she earned her an Emmy nom in 2012), continued work in film and a Broadway run as Loretta Lynn on the horizon, she could be EGOT-ing with the quickness.
Katy Perry: Like Deschanel, Katy's 0-for-4 in EGOT categories (seriously, she's never even won a Grammy), but we're willing to bet that she'll at least knock the "G" off the list in the near future. A TV special — or another guest star slot — could land her an Emmy, and, sure, we could see her attached to a musical one day (hey, if the Spice Girls can do it ...). An Oscar might prove tough, especially since we don't see the Academy honoring her work in "The Smurfs" any time soon, but she came close to landing a Best Original Song nod with "Wide Awake," so who knows.
Can Adele pull off the EGOT? Let us know in the comments below!

Oscars Red Carpet: The Best Moments You Didn't See

MTV News' memorable run-ins with Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence and other A-listers — with co-host Al Roker?

You can't spend three and a half hours on an Oscars red carpet and not walk away with some war stories, awkward moments and memories to last a lifetime. VH1's Janell Snowden and I tag-teamed our coverage this year, and here's what will stick in my brain:
A Moment With Kristen
Even before she stepped on the carpet, I'd heard that Kristen Stewart was unlikely to stop for any interviews, and once I saw she was hobbling around on crutches, I knew the odds were very long. But credit Janell for using the Horowitz name for all it's worth. As Kristen hobbled down the path for folks bypassing media, Janell screamed my name at the actress, hoping for a response — and, much to my surprise, it worked! The "Twilight" star stopped and gave me a big smile and hello, even raising one of her crutches in recognition. "What happened?" I asked. She laughed, replying, "I'm an idiot." Clumsy and cool, as always.
How Kristen Stewart Ended Up On Crutches
Crazy Collisions
When stars collide, it usually leads to good fun, and indeed, that happened a bunch at our red carpet spot. In one odd moment, Bradley Cooper just had to run up to say hi to Don Johnson. But the one I'm most proud of is introducing Quvenzhané Wallis to Jennifer Hudson — Oscar nominee to Oscar winner. Cute doesn't begin to describe their interaction, as Jennifer told the 9-year-old she can look forward to always being introduced as "an Oscar nominee" for the rest of her life.

Jennifer's Happy Meal Dreams
My love for Jennifer Lawrence knows no bounds. And when our lengthy red carpet chat, one of the biggest professional days of her life, devolved into a detailed discussion of her hunger for McDonald's, I wouldn't say I was surprised, but that's only because nothing surprises me about her anymore.

Jennifer Lawrence On 'Catching Fire'

My New Co-Host: Al Roker?!?
Let's be frank: The opening of the red carpet is a little spare, to be kind. But just as Janell and I gave up any hope of talking to a legitimate star in the first 30 minutes, there he was, emerging like a beacon of truth and honor: Al Roker. Al happened to be positioned right next to us, you see. Unfortunately, what started as a fun time-killer turned into a pilot for "Roker & Co." as he interjected his amusing(?) factoids during a bunch of our early chats. Thanks, Al. I think.

'Identity Thief' Wins Box Office During Oscars Weekend

While Melissa McCarthy was presenting at Sunday night's show, she also took back the #1 spot at the box office.

While Hollywood put their attention on the winners at Sunday night's Oscars, Melissa McCarthy managed to win back the box-office crown.
The "Bridesmaids" star was at the Dolby Theater presenting at the 85th Annual Academy Awards as numbers poured in to reveal that her"Identity Thief" had returned to #1 in theaters.
Melissa McCarthy And Jason Bateman: Concerned 'Identity Thief' Stars
Featuring McCarthy in her first starring role, "Identity Thief" has become the first big hit of 2013. The movie opened with $34.5 million a few weeks ago and returned to the #1 spot over the weekend with another $14.1 million for a $93.7 million haul. McCarthy plays the title character in the film, opposite Jason Bateman, who re-teams with his "Horrible Bosses" director Seth Gordon. The pair recently told MTV News that they actually bloodied each other up for real during the movie's hilariously violent fight scene.
Just as many industry experts predicted, even the muscle of The Rock couldn't take down McCarthy. Dwayne Johnson's action drama "Snitch" had to settle for #2 with $13 million. While the movie's debut was soft, Johnson should take some comfort in the fact that it fared better than 2013 action flops from Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham.

The weekend's only other new film, the alien-filled horror flick "Dark Skies," failed to crack the top five. Despite coming from the same producer as the "Paranormal Activity" movies and "Insidious," "Dark Skies" was #6 with just $8.9 million.
"Escape from Planet Earth" was #4 with $11 million. The Nicholas Sparks adaptation "Safe Haven" was just behind it with $10.6 million, for an 11-day total of $48.1 million. Last weekend's #1 film, "A Good Day to Die Hard," fell to #5 with $10 million, bringing its domestic to $51.8 million so far. It's the worst-reviewed of the series that made Bruce Willis a movie star.
The coming week should see a boost for the Academy Awards winners still in theaters, many of which were already doing well. Best Picture winner "Argo," now on DVD and iTunes, had made nearly $130 million. Daniel Day-Lewis won his third Best Actor Oscar for "Lincoln," which has made $178 million. "Silver Linings Playbook," which earned Jennifer Lawrence her first, has made $107.4 million. Anne Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress for "Les Misérables," which stood at $146 million after the weekend. "Life of Pi" won several awards, including Best Director for Ang Lee, and has made $113 million. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" is the biggest movie of his career with $158.8 million. Tarantino took him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; Christoph Waltz earned his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar — the first time was for his breakthrough role in another QT film, "Inglourious Basterds."
Overall, the weekend box-office tallied a soft $105 million, which was down 21.5 percent from the same period in 2012.

Oscars 2013 Predictions: Best Picture

'Argo' and 'Lincoln' are neck-and-neck for the ultimate award.

Two historical dramas, one Academy Award. Though nine films are nominated in the Best Picture category ("Amour," "Argo," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Les Misérables," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Zero Dark Thirty"), the race will likely come down to Ben Affleck's thriller and Steven Spielberg's biopic — a contest, quite literally, for the history books.
How will each film fare? Who will win? That's what we're here to discuss. Put on your stovepipe hat (or pin-striped leisure suit) and get comfortable as we go back to the future to predict the Best Picture winner.
'Argo' And 'Lincoln' Neck-And-Neck For Best Picture
Who Should Win
"Argo" and "Lincoln" both achieved something great in that they presented suspenseful narratives woven from long-ago historical events that most of us studied in high-school history. Yet, for a few moments, didn't it seem like our 16th president might not get the 13th Amendment passed? Or that the Americans might not make it onto the plane out of Iran? Skillful story-crafting at work, but "Argo" seemed to shine just a bit brighter. Maybe it was the witty dialogue ("Argo, f--- yourself!") or the show business self-deprecation or Affleck's Justin Bieber haircut. Whatever the alchemy, "Argo" felt like a more complete movie-going experience, and for that it deserves Best Picture.
Who Will Win
Like we said, this is going to be too close to call. "Lincoln" may boast the most nominations with 12 total (including nods for Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field), but "Argo"'s been cleaning up awards season with Golden Globe, BAFTA and National Board of Review wins. Based on that momentum, we'll give "Argo" a slight advantage. But we won't take it personally if you veto us.

Oscars 2013 Predictions: Best Actress

By far the most contentious of the major categories, the award for Best Actress is still up in the air three days out from the 85th Academy Awards.
A few factors have clouded the prognosticators predictions for the category. First of all, the front-runners, Emmanuelle Riva, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence, have yet to compete against each other in one category. While the two actresses, Chastain and Lawrence, won Golden Globes in their respective categories, the latter took the Screen Actors Guild Award over the "Zero Dark Thirty" star.
And speaking of the cinematic hunt for Osama bin Laden, the more karmic-minded predictors have declared an eventual Chastain win as the awards redemption for Kathryn Bigelow's snub, but payback is never the rule at the Oscars. And yet Riva's emotional performance, her age, and her screen legacy make her a threat worth factoring.
Who Will Be Crowned Oscar's Best Actress?
With so many things to consider, we did our best to give you an idea of what to expect come Oscar night.
Who Should Win
As much as we don't want to prescribe this "give 'em something" mentality, "Zero Dark Thirty" stands to go largely unacknowledged at this year's Academy Awards, apart from Mark Boal's likely win for Best Original Screenplay. As many sensationalized news stories predicted, the controversy surrounding the film's depiction of torture and what the sequences do or do not imply seems to have impacted its awards presence, which is unfortunate, especially for a film that will very likely be looked back on as one of the most important films of the era. Even on her own merit, Chastain gave a nuanced and stirring performance, the kind too rarely praised by the Academy.
Who Will Win
Are you ready for " 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence"? Because you should start preparing your mind for that reality. With controversy likely putting Chastain's chances down for the count, that leaves Riva and Lawrence, two great performances, one much, much easier to like than the other. With two nominations already under her belt, it's a matter of time before Lawrence takes home an Oscar, and this year may very well be the year.

Oscars 2013 Predictions: Best Actor

Even if you slept through half of sophomore American history, you know how Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" ends — with the ratification of the 13th amendment, abolishing slavery, and the beloved president's assassination. Yet, you still plunked down $10 to see these events unfold on screen, didn't you?
Similarly, this year's race for the Best Actor Oscar (much like the Best Supporting Actress category) is largely a foregone conclusion. Who else but Daniel Day-Lewis could take home the trophy? Well, that's what we're here to answer. In the lead up to Sunday's (February 24) ceremony, we're breaking down the major categories. So what about Best Actor?
Daniel Day-Lewis Tops Nominees For Best Actor Award
Who Should Win
First, let's make sure we know who we're talking about (lest we get lost in a Day-Lewis daze). In addition to the "Lincoln" lead, this year's Best Actor nominees include Bradley Cooper for "Silver Linings Playbook," Hugh Jackman for "Les Misérables," Joaquin Phoenix for "The Master" and Denzel Washington for "Flight." All formidable performances, to be sure, yet only one actor truly retreated into his role, emerging nearly unrecognizable — the result of pitch-perfect appearance and manner. And that man was Day-Lewis. I guess that's what a year of preparation will get you.
Who Will Win
The Academy likes nothing more than a transformative turn, bonus points awarded for biographical material (see: Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote," Jamie Foxx in "Ray," Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady," Charlize Theron in "Monster"), so on that criteria alone, Day-Lewis is the front-runner in this race. Add in all his earlier alphabet soup wins (BAFTA, CCA, SAG and, well, Golden Globe), and you don't need poll numbers to predict this one. Better clear room on the mantel for a third Oscar, Daniel.

Lindsay Lohan's 'The Canyons' Finds Home With IFC Films

The new-age noir will be released in theaters and digitally this summer.

It's been a wild ride for Lindsay's Lohan's "The Canyons," but the new-age noir has finally found its home. IFC Films has acquired the North American rights for the film, and it's slated to hit theaters this summer.
"I am delighted our film has found an enthusiastic home at IFC," director Paul Schrader said in a statement about the acquisition. "We envisioned 'The Canyons' as a multi-platform release from the beginning and no company knows that world better than IFC." The film will get a digital release the same day it hits theaters, and Schrader will host a presentation for the film at the Film Society of Lincoln Center early this summer.
Lohan and adult film star James Deen play lovers in the L.A.-set thriller. It was penned by Brett Easton Ellis and revolves around the lives of young people trying to make it Hollywood, by any means possible.

'Canyons' Producer Rallies For Lindsay Lohan

"The DIY ethos behind the movie dovetails perfectly with IFC's commitment to release the film this summer," Ellis shared in his own statement. "Finally the movie will be able to be seen and viewers can judge for themselves rather than relying on the undeservedly snarky press 'The Canyons' has received so far. This distribution model is the future for a certain kind of adult drama that is now officially non-existent within the old-school studio system. 'The Canyons,' regardless of what you think of it, is an example of the next step in what will now be the future of post-theatrical feature-length content."
The film made headlines last month when rumor had it that the SXSW Film Festival had passed on premiering the film after screening it due to "quality issues."
But producer Braxton Pope opened up to MTV News about those "issues," saying, "The content of the film is incompatible with provincial film sensibilities. When the film is released, audiences will decide whether it is successful or not."
Shortly after her casting, Pope spoke to MTV News about hiring the troubled actress, who has been long-battling tabloid drama for years. He didn't seem fazed by that aspect of her life.
"What's kind of lost in a lot of the Lindsay discussions is the fact that Lindsay is a very talented actress," he said. "She's very charismatic and she has a lot of acting skills. So her lifestyle and some of the things that she's gone through have tended to kind of overwhelm the fact, but Lindsay has kind of real talent. So for this part, we felt that she was really the right actor for a host of different reasons."

Selena Gomez 'Didn't Mind' Skimpy 'Spring Breakers' Bikini

'Whether I was in a bathing suit or a turtleneck, I was fine,' she tells MTV News.

As a wise man once said, "Bikinis and big booties, y'all. That's what life is about."
That man is Alien, as played by James Franco in "Spring Breakers," the new movie starring Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens — and the film has no shortage of either.
Selena Gomez And Her 'Spring Breakers' Bikini: A Match Made In Heaven?
MTV News sat down with Gomez to talk about "Spring Breakers," how her career has changed thanks to the ambitious project and the movie's, let's say, minimal wardrobe.
The bikini-heavy movie didn't faze Gomez, who said the revealing outfits just freed her even more. "It was so funny. The rest of the girls were in the trailer doing crunches. I didn't mind. I didn't care," she said. "People take pictures. People already have opinions. I wasn't there for that, necessarily. I was playing a character, so I just completely indulged myself in that. So whether I was in a bathing suit or a turtleneck, I was fine."
The problem that comes with taking on a project as ambitious as "Spring Breakers" is the age of the typical Gomez fan. (They're not exactly tall enough to ride this roller coaster.) While the actress appreciates her fans, they might have to sit this one out. "I do everything for my fans. I know that I have a younger following, and I so appreciate that, and I'm thankful for that, but I did warn them in my best ability, as I could," she said. "When I see the parents, I go, 'Maybe they don't see this one.' "
Gomez's older fans, the ones closer to her own age, are a different story. "We went to Toronto, and we premiered it at the festival, and there were girls my age who were laughing at the parts they needed to laugh at, scared at the parts they needed to be scared at," she said. "I feel like I didn't give them enough credit, because they understood what this film was. It's an art piece, and it's real, and it's so raw."
Ultimately, the actress believes her fans' support for her will overcome any misunderstanding of "Spring Breakers." "I think they're going to understand why I did it," she said. "I mean, maybe for the younger fans, they'll wait, but I think it was a good thing for me, and my fans were super supportive."
"Spring Breakers" opens in New York and L.A. on March 15 and expands nationwide on March 22.

'Harry Potter' Star Rupert Grint Becomes A 'Super' Hero

Rupert Grint will play the lead role on 'Super Clyde,' a new CBS comedy about a self-made superhero.

Here's hoping all of those years battling Dementors, Death Eaters and other assorted forms of sinister sorcerers left an impression on Rupert Grint — because based on his latest role, he's going to need all the battle experience he can get.
After years and years of starring in the "Harry Potter" film series as the titular boy wizard's red-headed and reliable best friend Ron Weasley, Grint has landed his biggest follow-up role to date as the lead character on a new CBS single-camera comedy pilot, "Super Clyde."
In "Super Clyde," Grint plays the title role of Clyde, described by The Hollywood Reporter as a "well-meaning and sweet yet slightly neurotic guy who never feels like he really fits in. The avid comic book reader considers himself a borderline agoraphobic with mild to severe anxiety issues who wishes he were a super hero himself. When Clyde inherits a $100,000 a month inheritance from his long-dead eccentric Uncle Bill, he decides that the cash will be his secret super power and will use it only for good and reward the good-hearted."
"Super Clyde" comes from "Raising Hope" creator Greg Garcia, who is writing and executive producing the pilot for CBS. The show marks Grint's first series regular role on a television series, but it's not his first post-"Potter" project. He'll next be seen in the World War II drama "Into the White," about a group of British and German pilots forced to work together after they're shot down in the bitter cold, snowy wilderness of Norway. The movie hits theaters on April 12.
Grint has also booked a part in "The Drummer," a Beach Boys biopic reportedly co-starring "The Dark Knight" actor Aaron Eckhart and "Kick-Ass" badass Chloe Moretz.

'Beautiful Creatures': The Reviews Are In!

Supernatural romance conjures plenty of 'Twilight' comparisons (both good and bad) from critics.

In late 2009, with Harry Potter's Hogwarts graduation in sight, Warner Bros. scooped up the film rights to yet another magically minded story, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's "Beautiful Creatures," which had yet to be published. Fast-forward more than three years, and the book series' first installment, adapted and directed by Richard LaGravenese, will attempt to spell-bind audiences when it opens on Valentine's Day (February 14).
Starring newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert, the film centers around Southern boy Ethan Wate (Ehrenreich), whose life is turned upside when caster Lena Duchannes (Englert) moves to town.
Critics are split on the merits of the supernatural romance, but they all seem to agree on one thing: It's got "Twilight" blood running through its veins (without the pesky urge to bite someone). Check out a sampling of reviews.

Beautiful Creatures
The Story "Told, at least at first, from the point of view of the boy, Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), this is literally the story of a dream of his come true — a recurring dream of a young woman partly obscured from view on a Civil War battlefield but one in which Ethan always ends up getting hit by lightning. That's pretty much what Ethan feels like is happening to him when a dark-haired beauty, Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), arrives at school and gives him something to think about other than applying to college." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter
The Inevitable "Twilight" Comparison " 'Beautiful Creatures' is arriving in a marketplace full of 'Twilight' junkies still eager for their supernatural teen-romantic fix, and the film's concept couldn't be clearer: It's 'Twilight' with the sexes reversed. This time it's the boy who's the mortal: moody, bookish Ethan, the outsider in his sleepy small town of Gatlin, S.C., though Alden Ehrenreich plays him more like a sensitive jock on Glee. Lena (Alice Englert), the new girl at school, comes from a family of witches (or, as they're known here, Casters), and on the day she turns 16 she'll be 'claimed,' either by the light side or (more likely, due to a family curse) the dark side." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
On Newcomers Ehrenreich and Englert "Enrenreich [sic] oozes southern charm while reminding us in looks and charisma of a young Leonardo DiCaprio (he has DiCaprio's over-enunciation thing down-pat). Englert, looking like a cross between Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara, is a comparatively moodier and subtler character, but she too gets moments of wry amusement and sarcastic biting wit, especially in her earlier moments. Point being, the two young leads are terrific and are terrific together, which means you actually care about how the central romance is resolved even as the supernatural mythology takes over in the last act." — Scott Mendelson, Huffington Post

'Beautiful Creatures' Helps 'Find The Beauty' In Oneself
Faithfulness to the Source Material "Sometimes it doesn't pay to read the book. Based on the whimpers of the young women coming out of a preview screening, 'Beautiful Creatures,' the movie, isn't nearly faithful enough to 'Beautiful Creatures,' the novel. Double-checking with the one person I know who's a fan of the four-volume 'Caster Chronicles' by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (of which 'Creatures' is the first installment), the teenage hero's father is a crucial figure in the book but nowhere to be seen in the film. Two key characters have been mooshed into one. And there are other sins against the cosmos. Which only proves the foolishness of expecting Hollywood to do right by a cherished source when there's money to be made and a franchise to launch." — Ty Burr,Boston Globe
The Last Word "The film ultimately plays like so much teenage girl poetry, heavy on the angst, endearingly naive in its notions of love and yet brought vividly to life by a game cast, evocative locations (both indoors and out) and stunning anamorphic lensing. Louisiana works nicely for Civil War-obsessed Gatlin, suggesting a tween-friendly 'True Blood.' " — Peter Debruge, Variety

Valentine's Day: A Movie Lover's Guide

New releases 'Beautiful Creatures' and 'Safe Haven' are the perfect way to spend the romantic holiday.

Love is in the air everywhere you look around today — and that goes double for all you movie lovers out there! That's right, kids: Valentine's Day is upon us, and it's just one of the many reasons to indulge your movie-going habits today. Forget the box of chocolates (unless you're watching "Forrest Gump"), forget the roses (or bring them along; the more the merrier!), and let the heat of the movies fuel you and your special someone's special day.
Read on for our Valentine's Day guide for movie lovers!

Beautiful Creatures

Go To The Movies
That's the easiest answer, right? It covers multiple bases: it's a physical and emotional adventure, an excuse to indulge your sweet tooth, and let's not even get into what might happen when the theater lights dim. (But seriously, like your cell phones, keep your hands off while the movie's on. It's gross and rude.) But smart money says you'll be as invested as what's on the screen as anything else, judging by this week's new releases. The Nicholas Sparks adaptation "Safe Haven" and the new YA phenomenon-in-the-making "Beautiful Creatures" both arrive in theaters today, so love-loving movie-lovers have two great selections to choose from. And if you're a counter-programming kind of couple, there's no better choice than Bruce Willis' latest very-bad-day flick, "A Good Day to Die Hard," where the roses are only as red as the bloodied faces of John McClane's enemies.
Bring The Movies To You
The possibilities are endless for the couple who prefers to enjoy a quiet Valentine's Day at home, especially given the latest movies to arrive on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD this week. There's no better choice than "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," easily one of the most touching high school dramas of the past decade; it ranked as our second-favorite film of 2012for a reason. But as is the case at the box-office this weekend, the home-viewing crowd could always veer away from the romantic and dive head-first into ''Sky fall'' the 23rd James Bond movie that sees Agent 007 up against a vengeful spy from a bygone era. It's action-packed and deadly, but has more than enough shirtless Daniel Craig and scantily-clad Bond women to ensure that every couple is feeling the holiday spirit.
Binge, Binge, Binge!
And not just on chocolate, for goodness sake — did you learn nothing from Augustus Gloop? We're talking about binging on all the movies and television shows you've been meaning to catch up on, but haven't yet. The new season of "Mad Men" is just around the corner, for example; what better time than Valentine's Day to let Don Draper seduce you with 65 completed episodes, all viewable on Netflix? Even better, you can spend the day binge-watching "House of Cards," the Netflix series that released all 13 episodes of its first season in one shot. Sure, Kevin Spacey outwitting anyone and everyone on Capitol Hill doesn't sound romantic, but that's only because you aren't aware of just how much heat co-stars Kate Mara, Corey Stoll and others bring to the table.
Relive The Romance
Of course, if you don't want to sit in front of a big or small screen for two hours or more, there are still romantic options for movie lovers to explore — like recreating scenes and visiting iconic locations from your favorite films! If you're in New York, embrace your destiny, John Cusack-style, and get a frozen hot chocolate at "Serendipity 3," or go get a Katz's pastrami on rye if you're a "When Harry Met Sally" fan. Wherever you are, find a filming location from your favorite love story, and go make some movie magic of your own.
