The new-age noir will be released in theaters and digitally this summer.
It's been a wild ride for Lindsay's Lohan's "The Canyons," but the new-age noir has finally found its home. IFC Films has acquired the North American rights for the film, and it's slated to hit theaters this summer.
"I am delighted our film has found an enthusiastic home at IFC," director Paul Schrader said in a statement about the acquisition. "We envisioned 'The Canyons' as a multi-platform release from the beginning and no company knows that world better than IFC." The film will get a digital release the same day it hits theaters, and Schrader will host a presentation for the film at the Film Society of Lincoln Center early this summer.
Lohan and adult film star James Deen play lovers in the L.A.-set thriller. It was penned by Brett Easton Ellis and revolves around the lives of young people trying to make it Hollywood, by any means possible.
"The DIY ethos behind the movie dovetails perfectly with IFC's commitment to release the film this summer," Ellis shared in his own statement. "Finally the movie will be able to be seen and viewers can judge for themselves rather than relying on the undeservedly snarky press 'The Canyons' has received so far. This distribution model is the future for a certain kind of adult drama that is now officially non-existent within the old-school studio system. 'The Canyons,' regardless of what you think of it, is an example of the next step in what will now be the future of post-theatrical feature-length content."
The film made headlines last month when rumor had it that the SXSW Film Festival had passed on premiering the film after screening it due to "quality issues."
But producer Braxton Pope opened up to MTV News about those "issues," saying, "The content of the film is incompatible with provincial film sensibilities. When the film is released, audiences will decide whether it is successful or not."
Shortly after her casting, Pope spoke to MTV News about hiring the troubled actress, who has been long-battling tabloid drama for years. He didn't seem fazed by that aspect of her life.
"What's kind of lost in a lot of the Lindsay discussions is the fact that Lindsay is a very talented actress," he said. "She's very charismatic and she has a lot of acting skills. So her lifestyle and some of the things that she's gone through have tended to kind of overwhelm the fact, but Lindsay has kind of real talent. So for this part, we felt that she was really the right actor for a host of different reasons."
