Intel already cracked the CPU market for some Android models with devices like the Motorola RAZR i. That phone, which just got Jelly Beaned in France the other day, runs on a single-core 2GHz Intel Atom processor using the 32nm manufacturing process. Now it looks like the chip maker wants to bring the oldWintel team to the world of smartphones. An ad in Linkedin reveals that Intel is seeking Windows Phone Engineers. The content of the ad also reveals what Intel has in mind as it says that the company is going "beyond PCs and servers to netbooks, handhelds, consumer electronics devices, and more."
But Intel is not going to be spending money on a lost cause. Hermann Eul, President of Intel’s Mobile Communications Group, said that while Intel's roadmap includes products that can support Windows on a smartphone, the decision whether to put x86 into a Windows Phone is ultimately a financial one. Judging from the job ad, it seems that Intel has decided to at least move forward.
Right now, besides Motorola, ZTE and Lenovo are putting Intel inside (see what we did there?) a small portion of their Android smartphones, but these are for models sold in Europe and China. The Intel Atom is said to out-benchmark ARM supported silicon in performance and battery life, and that could give manufacturers a valid reason to broaden the use of Intel inside Android phones.
