Sony’s thin waterproof Xperia Tablet Z to be announced in Japan next week

Yesterday we heard about an upcoming Sony Xperia Tablet Z, with high-resolution display and waterproof body. Sony has been left out in the tablet wars precisely because of the resolution its latest Xperia Tablet S shipped with, as well as some issues with the water resistance that prompted a sales halt.

The Xperia Tablet Z may apparently be announced as soon as next week, coming to Japan's NTT DoCoMo carrier lineup, with a 1920x1200 pixels 10 inch display, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, plus one 8 MP camera on the back, all in a body that is just 6.9 mm thin and water tight. Not the iPad 4's or Nexus 10's screen resolutions, but much more than the current HD displays Sony uses for its slates anyway.

As usual, we are waiting with bated breath for the announcement and the price point. If this waterproof trend in thin devices from Sony keeps up, the company has every chance to have found a niche the big players haven't filled yet. Here's the full specs list that is rumored to become reality January 22nd, when DoCoMo should be unveiling its spring portfolio:

  • 10.1-inch full HD display
  • 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB internal storage
  • 8.1 MP rear camera, 2.2MP front-facing camera
  • NFC
  • LTE
  • Water- and dust-proof IP55/IP57
  • 6,000mAh battery
  • 6.9 mm thin
  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
