RIM VP says BlackBerry 10 will have (most of) the apps you want

BlackBerry 10 is only a few weeks away, and we've been hearing a lot from a lot of sources. We've even heard that there is "strong" demand for the platform in Canada. Now, RIM's VP of Global Alliances and Business Development, Martyn Mallick is talking about what to expect from the app ecosystem, and the consensus seems to be that BlackBerry 10 will have (most of) the apps you want.

In speaking with The Verge, RIM's VP of Global Alliances and Business Development, Martyn Mallick said that BlackBerry 10 will have the apps it needs to be successful at launch. Although, going on in the interview, Mallick did temper that statement with the standard concession that we hear from new platforms, saying that "At the end of the day, you're not going to have every app."

But, another RIM exec, Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations, gave the other half to that concession, saying that "Even if a particular app isn't there that the user would want, there will be other credible substitutes."

The idea of "credible substitutes" is the trouble though. In some cases, substitutes can be perfectly acceptable, but in some cases there is a need for official apps. We've seen this quite a bit with Windows Phone, where there are no official Google apps, so if you want to use a "credible substitute" for Google Reader, Google Voice, or Google Talk, you're going to have to agree to give your login credentials to an unproven source. In many cases, it works out okay, but for those who want the best security "credible substitutes" can be a shaky proposition.
