After Windows Phone 8 launch, Microsoft says app downloads and developer revenue have doubled

After Windows Phone 8 launch, Microsoft says app downloads and developer revenue have doubledA tweet from Todd Brix, Senior Director, Windows Phone Apps Team reveals some positive news from the Windows Phone 8 camp involving the Windows Phone Marketplace. Since last month's launch of Windows Phone 8 flavored handsets, the number of apps downloaded has doubled. That's good news, but even better for developers is that developer revenue has doubled at the same time.

While it's unknown if the comparisons are sequential (month vs. prior month) or annual (year-over-year), the figures have to be getting those on the WP team in Redmond excited. The numbers indicate strong demand for apps on the Windows Phone 8 platform. You might recall that lack of a strong applications marketplace was one of the reasons why the Palm Pre didn't take off following an exciting introduction at CES 2009

If more developers are inspired to write for Windows Phone 8 by the possibility of financial gain, it could help the Windows Phone Marketplace close the gap between it and the Apple App Store and Android flavored Google Play Store.
