Owners of Windows Phone 8 models might harbor a little fear inside that their handset will end up scrap metal like many of the Windows Phone 7 models that had gone before them. Windows Phone 7 had a fairly strict hardware requirement that by the time Microsoft was ready to update the phones, there was just enough wriggle room for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 7.8.Microsoft's senior marketing manager Greg Sullivan says that the company is in the middle of its product cycle with Windows Phone 8. "We're not going to do this thing where we announce the next version months and months before it's available," he says, knowing that the mobile OS is only a few months old. "Over the course of the next several months, I wouldn't be surprised to see some exciting new devices and more interoperability before we start talking about what is next," he added.
Although the next update is rumored to be Windows Phone Blue, Sullivan would not confirm that. What he did say, though, should bring a smile to the faces of current Windows Phone 8 owners. "We're going to have an upgrade path going forward," the executive declared. He also said that unlike Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8 can handle new hardware components. The lack of that flexibility is what doomed the previous OS.
"Windows Phone 8 can evolve. We have an architecture that enables portability and is fundamentally hardware independent. As the market evolves and customer requirements demand it, we'll evaluate options."-Greg Sullivan, Microsoft senior marketing manager
