Marissa Mayer has talked a few times about how Yahoo is going to place a lot of its energy on mobile, and it looks like a big part of that will be in focusing Yahoo's app portfolio. Mayer had talked about making an all-in-one Yahoo app to focus the company's offerings, and the start to that will be in the company killing off 80% of its existing mobile apps. But, Yahoo did also purchase a new app today too.
Mayer said today at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference that while there are currently somewhere between 60 and 70 apps coming from Yahoo, the company would cut that by 80%, and bring the final total down to around 12 to 15 core apps, which is still quite a number, but much more manageable. Of course, on the other side of things, Yahoo is continuing to acquire apps, which may or may not continue as standalone products, or be folded into existing Yahoo properties.
Today, Yahoo also announced that it had purchased Alike, a mobile location-based suggestion engine app similar to Foursquare. The Alike team said that it would no longer be supporting its Alike Nearby app since it would now be joining the Yahoo mobile team.
