Out of money, Director finishes shooting his movie on an Apple iPhone 5

The Apple iPhone has always been praised for the abilities of its camera. Now, a director with an Academy Award nominated film is admitting that because of a shortage of money, he used a $1.99 app on his Apple iPhone 5 to finish shooting the film. Malik Bendjelloul had started filming his documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" with a Super 8 camera, but ran out of money and could not afford anymore film even though he had a few shots left to film. So Bendjelloul downloaded a $1.99 app called 8mm Vintage Camera and finished the movie.

While other directors have used the Apple iPhone to film movies, and there is an iPhone film festival to screen movies shot with the phone, this is the first time that an iPhone shot film has been nominated for an Academy Award. Meanwhile, word of mouth has really helped the 8mmVintage Camera app take off as downloads of the software have surged in the last five days.

Will the Apple iPhone 5 help Malik Bendjelloul win an Oscar? We will find out on February 24th when the Academy Awards airs.
