Earlier on Sunday, we told you that Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs had announced that the Firefox OS would be available in the U.S. sometime in 2014. This year, it will be seen in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela with additional markets expected to be announced soon. Mozilla also announced that the HTML5 based OS will be available in phones produced by ZTE, Huawei, LG and Alcatel and all of them will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (which means that they can use the Qualcomm BatteryGuru).
Mozilla released a video on Sunday to show off some of the OS in action. One of the interesting features of the OS was displayed when a search for the movie Skyfall was done and on the screen, a number of movie-related apps appeared such as Fandango and IMDb. Many were apps that you might have never thought to install on your phone.
The Firefox OS, which is open source like Android, will try to take root at first in areas where the iOS-Android duopoly isn't as prevalent. So far, 17 carriers have agreed to carry Fireox OS flavored handsets including Sprint in the U.S. The list includes America Movil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefonica, Telenor, TMN and VimpelCom.
