Fall Out Boy Say Reunion Won't Be 'Our Best 2003 Impersonation'

'We wanted to do something that was us now,' singer Patrick Stump tells MTV News days after FOB ends retirement.

Fall Out Boy fans had been holding out for a reunion in the four years since the guys went on a "indefinite hiatus." Two days ago, they got their wish when the band announced plans to come out of retirement with a brand-new album.

But after going their separate ways for so long, the Chicago pop/punk act told MTV News on Wednesday (February 6) that if they were going to do it all — they knew they had to do it right.

"We didn't want to come back just to bask in the glory days and, like, and collect a few checks and pretend ... and do our best 2003 impersonation," lead singer Patrick Stump told us. "We wanted to do something that was us now. And if it weren't right, we weren't going to do it."

Fall Out Boy Wanted Their Reunion To Reflect The Present, Not The Past

Although there had been some early chatter that it was happening, the news that Fall Out Boy were ready to rock again only became official on Monday. "The funny thing is that when we were denying [getting back together], a lot of people were like, 'Oh you guys are so lying,' " Stump recalled of the reunion buzz. "It's like, 'Well, not really 'cause we weren't really sure.' "

Eventually, though, they figured it all out, and Stump and with his bandmates — bassist Pete Wentz, guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley — were ready to make music again.

"Nobody could figure out the whole thing," Wentz said of the rumors. "There was little pieces that people kind of figured out, but that's what was kind of blowing my mind, that it got narrowed down [by fans] that, 'Take This to Your Grave, their first album, came out 10 years ago [so] they're probably going to like do a reunion tour.' It blew my mind that we recorded an entire album in secret," he added. "There was a couple times there was paparazzi that got us outside and didn't put two and two together."

The reunion is now in full swing. The guys dropped their single "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up)" on Monday and they'll release their fifth studio album, Save Rock And Roll, on May 7.

And in addition to upcoming shows in New York, Chicago, L.A., London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney and Melbourne, they'll also play during NBA All-Star weekend on February 16. It will mark Fall Out Boy's first live TV performance since reuniting. They're set to perform their new single, and adding even more buzz to that show is the fact that rapper 2 Chainz appears in the video for the track.
