Drake's Success 'Wasn't Just A Fluke,' He Defends

'I just wanted to make it known that I did work really hard to get here,' Drake tells MTV News of his 'Started From the Bottom' video and single.

HOUSTON, TEXAS — You don't get to be Drake by just hoping for success. While his rap rise may have seemed effortless to some, Drizzy is determined to set the record straight, beginning with his new single"Started From the Bottom" from his upcoming Nothing was the Same LP.
"The gist of it was kinda the back story of my life," Drake told MTV News while he walked the red carpet at the 2013 NBA All-Star Game in Houston on Sunday. "I don't really speak on it that much, which kinda allows people the opportunity to make up what they want about me."

Drake 'Worked Really Hard' To Get From The Bottom To Here

Before rap, Drizzy was most known for his role as the wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," but in the "Started From the Bottom" video, Drake alludes that he once worked in a pharmacy to make his ends meet. It appears that the Young Money bread winner didn't always live a glamorous life. "I just wanted to make it known that I did work really hard to get here and it wasn't just a fluke and it wasn't easy by any means," he explained.
The song's video, which was directed by Director X, shows the rap star working as a night manager in Shoppers Drug Mart, a popular Canadian chain. He later makes enough money through rap that he can take his friends on a vacation to the Dominican Republic. The clip features cameos from Drake's mom and his producer buddy Noah "40" Shebib, just to name a few. "All the people in the video from my family to my friends, everybody worked really hard and we're just happy to be here," he exclaimed.
Through his lens, Director X was able to capture something very intimate to Drake and make it grand. "There were no hired extras in that big party scene, everybody knew everybody," he told MTV News in an interview last week. "That's a regular Drake thing. He does bowling parties, that shisha club, that's his club Paradise, that's his thing. He does that. That vacation? That was their real vacation. That wasn't a for-TV vacation, we just showed up with the cameras and shot. So to me the whole thing was a celebration, just [capturing] the bigness of all that."
On "Started From the Bottom" Drake wants to tell his story his way, plus rep for his hometown. "That was kinda the message behind it," he said. "Obviously everything I do is for Toronto, that's why the video looks the way it does."
