Ab-Soul shoots down the possibility of an album with Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock.
All four members of Black Hippy — Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock — have showcased their MC skills with individuals albums and plenty of features, but what about that group project fans have been begging for? During his visit to "RapFix Live" on Wednesday,Ab-Soul likened it to Detox 2.
Will A Black Hippy Album Ever Happen?
Translation: The album is never coming out. "It's Detox 2. The Black Hippy album is Detox 2," the TDE rapper told Sway, taking the running joke about Dr. Dre's long delayed Detox album even further.
In 2012, Ab-Soul released his critically acclaimed Control System LP, while Kendrick dropped good kid, m.A.A.d city and Schoolboy Q releasedHabits & Contradictions. With so much going on individually, it's not difficult to see why a group album is out of the question at the moment.
"I want some money if we do Black Hippy," Schoolboy jokingly told MTV News, when questioned about the possibility of a group album last year. "We all here for one goal and that's to prevail in this music, live comfortably and stay happy."
With a group album officially shot down, fans can look forward to Ab-Soul's Unit 6 project with JMSN. He says the album is completed, and only being held due to management issues. "Unit 6, we're just bumping heads on the management side," he explained. "It doesn't have nothing to do with me and JMSN. The project is finished."
Raekwon, who also appeared on "RapFix Live," gave the young rapper some advice for navigating those tough situations. "You have to negotiate because they want the best for you. I go through it too," he said of dealing with management issues. "But at the same time, I believe in letting an artist be an artist. Sometimes your management may not see you take control, so they feel like they have to take control, but [you should] try things and still do what you wanna do."
