A couple weeks ago, we told you that Koush, creator of ClockworkMod Recovery and ROM Manager, had a new beta app in the works for Android users. The app, called Carbon, promised to be the app backup and sync solution that was missing from the platform, and today that app left its beta status behind and was released into the Google Play Store.
The app is designed to allow users to backup apps and app data to local storage or the cloud, or to sync apps and data between Android devices. But, the best thing about the app is that it does not require a rooted device. Setup will have a couple extra steps if you aren't rooted, but the app will still work, which automatically gives Carbon a step up on the reigning Android backup king, Titanium Backup.
The app comes in two flavors. There is a free version of the app which is ad-supported and limits users to backups and restores from local storage or your PC, and the premium version ($4.99) which removes the ads and allows for automatic backups, syncing between Android devices, and backing up to cloud services Dropbox, Google Drive, and Box.
The only thing to be wary of is that the app will not work on Motorola devices because Motorola devices have a bug that breaks Android's backup mechanism.
