Slap an E-Ink screen on the back of your iPhone 5 with popSLATE

Imagine an iPhone case that you could customize to your liking at the tap of a button. Now imagine an iPhone with a secondary display on the back. Okay, good. Now it is time for the final step: put these two together. You'll get something just like the popSLATE, which is a pretty awesome Indiegogo project that needs your support before it can become a real product.

The popSLATE is a protective iPhone 5 case with a 4-inch, ruggedized E-Ink screen on its back. Yeah, it may be only capable of displaying graphics in black and white, but it has outstanding outdoor visibility, all the while consuming a negligible amount of energy. In fact, a static image can be displayed for a week, and the accessory won't even affect the phone's battery life. Using the dedicated Popslate app, one can set a new image, either by choosing one from the stock gallery, or by simply importing a photo from the gallery. You can even scroll through different graphics by tapping on the phone's back. 

The popSLATE project needs to raise about $55,000 more before the January 15 deadline, so if you dig the idea, visit its Indiegogo page and pledge. You can have one for $100, or three for $267 in case you are feeling generous. If all necessary funding is raised, the popSLATE should be on the market by June 2013.
