On December 11th, Nokia received a design patent for a phone with a protruding camera bump. The original application for the patent was submitted on October 14th 2011. The hopes of many were that the diagram showed what would be a new Nokia Lumia model with a PureView camera sensor with, oh, 20-40MP.
Instead it turns out to be the Nokia 801T made for the Chinese market. The device has an 8MP camera which does protrude slightly, and was released in September 2012 for China Mobile's proprietary TD-SCDMA 3G network. That is similar to the move made by Nokia to offer the Nokia Lumia 920T for customers of the world's largest carrier.
While the hoped for Nokia Lumia model with a new PureView sensor has been dashed for now, perhaps a new model along these lines will eventually be released by the Finnish manufacturer.
