Half of all app revenue on Android and iOS goes to just 25 developers, mostly game studios

Half of all app revenue on Android and iOS goes to just 25 developers, mostly game studiosHot on the heels of the latest application store analysis, research firm Canalys released its own study of the App Store and Google Play. It confirms the findings of the previous study, and shows that during the first twenty days of November, 25 developers bagged half of all app revenue, to the tune of $60 million distributed amongst them.

Unsurprisingly, out of those 25 developers, 24 are game studios, with the only non-gaming company making it in the top 25 being Pandora. In fact, out of the top 300 paid applications at the App Store, 145 are games, and in the Play Store it's 116 out of the 300 top paid applications. Alternatively, 94 out of the 300 top free apps are games in the App Store, with 110 out of the top 300 free for Android being games too.

Canalys, however, says that discoverability for startup devs is geting increasingly difficult as the search functions are optimized for the top grossing or popular apps, with a startup application having much smaller chances to be found and installed, compared to the big boys' work.
