And now, it’s gotten its worthy successors in the form of the brand new dual-core AllWinner A20 and quad-core AllWinner A31. The cores inside them are based on ARM’s Cortex A7 architecture, the more power efficient counterpart to the A15 in ARM’s big.LITTLE setup.
Good news is the two chips will power Android 4.2 (or newer) devices.
When it comes to their specs, the AllWinner A20 is a dual-core chip with the ARM Mali-400 graphics processor and 512KB of L2 cache. It supports 2160p HD video playback. Good news is that it is pin-to-pin compatible with the preceding A10 chip, so manufacturers could easily use existing designs to update their lineups with this new chip.
The quad-core AllWinner A31 is also A7-based, but this time not pin-to-pin compatible. It packs much more powerful graphics in the form of the PowerVR SGX 544, capable of decoding 4k video streams.
