Delivery times for the Apple iPhone (L) and the Google Nexus 4 |
Those looking for the Apple iPhone 5
this holiday shopping season should have no problem finding the phone
in stock. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster recently issued a report saying
that the device will be found in some stores during between now and
Christmas. In addition, the shipping time for online orders has dropped
dramatically. Recently, delivery times have dropped from 3 to 4 weeks to just 2 weeks and is now down to
one week on Apple's web site.
On the other hand, the Google Nexus 4 is very hard to find. The first time it went on sale at the Google Play Store, both 8GB and 16GB models sold out quickly.
Even at T-Mobile, which offered the 16GB variant subsidized at $199
after a $50 mail-in rebate and for $499 unlocked, the phone was sold
out. And that happened even though the unsubsidized price for the phone
at the carrier is $150 more than what Google charges at the Play Store.
Last week, another batch of phones was sold out quickly and now Google
is accepting orders that won't be shipped for as long as 8 to 9 weeks for the 8GB model and 6 to 7 weeks for the 16GB version.
It
is going to be hard for those wanting a Google Nexus 4 to find one over
the next several weeks. How many of these potential buyers will turn to
the Apple iPhone 5 this holiday season? Google might want to keep this
in mind and ramp up production of their next Nexus handset prior to the
next holiday shopping season.
