You've probably been taught in school that pouring hot water in a
glass container isn't a good idea. That's because the rapid shift in
temperature may cause the glass to crack, and the thinner the material,
the greater the risk is. Apparently, the same phenomenon can be observed
on a smartphone – the Google Nexus 4,
in particular, which has a fancy glass layer on its back. And no, hot
liquids aren't required. Reportedly, all that it takes is a warm hand
and a solid counter top.
According to a report posted on Droid-Life,
the damaged Google Nexus 4 unit you see in the photo below got this
nasty crack without being abused in any way. The owner says that he
simply laid the device gently on a stone counter top after using it. He
also notes that the smartphone's back had gotten warm after being held
for a while (and from the heat dissipated by the chips inside, we
suppose). And that's how it happened – quickly cooling the glass back of
the Google Nexus 4 led to irreversible damage. Unsurprisingly, the
AT&T LG Optimus G is said to be just as vulnerable to temperature changes as it has an identical glass back.
Of
course, there's already a plethora of forum posts on the internet
discussing how fragile the Google Nexus 4 glass back is. However, while
many people report shattering theirs one way or another, the case above
is one of the few that don't involve a drop on a hard surface. Would any
Google Nexus 4 owners share their experience with us? Let's hear your
story down in the comments!
