Best new Android, iOS and Windows Phone apps for October 2012

October was a big month for apps. The big news is that Google finally caught up with Apple and now has 700,000 apps on Google Play, as many as the quantity on the App Store.

But quantity is not everything, and there still seems to be a very small (and diminishing gap) when it comes to quality new apps arriving on Android. Android has covered virtually all the essentials, but when it comes to novelty, Apple’s ecosystem still leads the way.

What could turn out to be very important as well is that October was a prelude to a busy November when we expect to see a boom in Windows Phone 8 apps. In the last month of this fall, developers are finally getting access to the WP8 SDK and should start pumping out new apps. Or at least Microsoft hopes so.

To avoid all confusion and flamewars in the comments, this month we are separating the iOS, Android and Windows Phone apps. First come the 10 best new iPhone and iPad apps, then our 10 picks for Android, and finally a couple of Windows Phone additions.

2. SnapJoy - iOS - Free

SnapJoy for is basically a timeline for your photos - it arranges them neatly by the year, month and date, in tidily separated areas.

3. The Magazine - iOS - Free

Coming from Instagram’s creator Marco Arment, The Magazine is a modern, simplistic take on a magazine for iOS.

4. Digg - iOS - Free

Digg, the page for all your favorite pages on the net, seemed lost and forgotten a couple of months ago, until it was suddenly reinvented and reimagined. That newly designed Digg now comes to iOS as a modern-looking app.

5. Inkly Cards - iOS - Free

Inkly Cards is an original card app that takes the somewhat ordinary approach of digitizing written cards and kind of reverses it. With it, you can scan your handwritten well-fishing to friends and put it inside one of many digital cards. Awesome and very personal.

Pyramids 3D is a dream come true for lovers of all things Egypt. It takes you on a journey throughout the ancient pyramids, with all the drawings on the walls, the buried mummies, pharaohs, and all of that in a very nice visual wrapper. Perfect for both kids and parents, if you can swallow the price tag.
