THERE was not a razor in sight as participants went head-to-head at the National Beard and Moustache Championships in Las Vegas.The world’s funkiest facial hair was on display at the weekend event, with categories ranging from the ‘delicate Dali’ moustache to the ‘anything-goes full beard freestyle’.More than 3,000 ‘beardsmen’ took part in the competition which aims to find the best facial fuzz across 17 categories.The most ambitious full beards, styled sideburns and the traditional English moustache were also celebrated at the event currently in its third year.Organisers say they aim to find the ‘best of the best’ in each category.‘The World Beard and Moustache Championships, the premier event in the international sport of bearding, brings the owners of the world’s most elaborate facial hair together every two years,’ explains the competition’s website.‘A panel of distinguished judges chooses the best of the best in a variety of categories ranging from the most delicate of moustaches to the elaborate anything-goes freestyle full beard.’The competition comes as Agatha Christie’s Poirot topped a poll shortlisting the most iconic facial hair of the last century to coincide with the launch of Movember.The famous Belgian detective beat off competition from wrestler Hulk Hogan, Charlie Chaplin and late American comedian Groucho Marx to grab first place.
