Apple iPad mini new features
1. Screen, screen, screen: 7.85 inches
What do you know - it’s all about the screen. It’s mini, but it’s also larger than what the competition offers at 7 inches. Moreover, it’s better optimized.
2. But it’s not Retina
Retina stands for a resolution around 300ppi or higher, that Apple claims is the point when the human eye can’t make out the individual pixels. That’s exactly what the iPad mini doesn’t have. Its pixel density comes at 163ppi.
3. 35% larger display area
We said optimized but before we get into that let’s first mention display area is 35% larger than the one on 7-inch tablets like the Nexus 7.
4. 49% larger webpages
But since Apple doesn’t include on screen buttons like Google, you have all the screen real estate for webpages. This optimization and the lack of it on Android makes for 49% larger webpages on the iPad mini.
5. The new iPad is very thin at 7.2mm
That makes it even thinner than the new iPhone 5 which comes at 7.6mm.
6. It’s also very lightweight
11 ounces or 312 grams. That's much less than the 340-gram Nexus 7 despite the larger screen on the mini.
7. This makes it great for reading and holding with one hand
If it hasn't yet become obvious, this smaller tablet will be your perfect bed companion. Not romantically. Hopefully.
8. Apps: did you know Apple has 275,000 of them made for tablets?
Did you? It really has. Android on the other hand has much less. And Windows 8/RT? Don’t even ask.
9. A5 chip powers it: the same one as on iPad 2
The A5 is the same chip we saw on the iPad 2. It should be a dual-core one, clocked at between 800MHz to 1GHz. And with not that many pixels to push, it has all chances to perform pretty damn well despite its age.
10. LTE versions
The iPad mini sells in Wi-Fi only and 4G LTE versions, making it possible to get things on the go everywhere.
11. FaceTime HD camera
The front facing camera is of the HD kind, great for your video conferencing. Apple advertizes this as a perfect tool to clearly see your kids’ first steps and funny moments, but we won’t even start guessing what else you could use HD video conferencing for.
12. 5MP iSight rear camera
And if you thought that taking pictures with a tablet is weird, you’d get a lot more weird. That’s because the iPad mini has an iSight 5MP rear camera, that should make for pretty decent images.
13. Lightning connector
Of course, it comes with the new Lightning connector.
14. It’s got Siri
15. 10-hour battery life
Apple has set the tablet standard battery life at 10 hours and it doesn’t make an exception with the mini.
16. All aluminum body
This feels really premium and nothing like most of the tablets out there.
17. Prices start at $329 for Wi-Fi only
$329 for 16GB version, add $100 more for 32GB and yet $100 more for 64GB.
18. And $459 for LTE-enabled iPad mini
This is $130 more for LTE connectivity.
19. You can pre-order it on Friday
And we mean this Friday. Like, in three days.
20. iPad mini release date is November 2nd (but for Wi-Fi only)
Obviously, the LTE version will take longer to come, just as with the original iPad. Patience is a virtue.
